2008 Best Online Games

World's largest MMORPG World of Warcraft, or WoW by its 10M fans, was named best role playing game at the first ever Global Online Game organized by Korea Game Industry Agency and held last week at the Seoul Trade & Exhibition Center in the South Korean capital Seoul.

WoW was honored to inaugurate the first official online game award, conducted by a committee of judges of different parts of the worlds, awarding six different game categories: best role playing game, best adventure/action game, sports game, strategy/simulation game, first person shooter game, and racing/casual game for the terminated year. Each category included five rivals (which their names were not announced), chosen by the judges according to set criteria: the game scenario/planning, graphics/character, music/sound, technology, and overall creativity. To avoid allegations of cultural diversity, the judges committee was assembled by critics and chief-editors of leading online games publications in the US, China, South Korea and Germany.

And the Best Online Games for 2008 are:

Role Playing Game: World of Warcraft

Blizzard Entertainment's fourth and most lucrative product, latest version released November 2008, the exquisite role playing game had accumulated a record breaking fan base of over 10 million players, making it the most popular MMORPG and a leading candidate in the most addictive, family wrecking games online.

Sports Game: FIFA 09

The latest release in Electronic Arts series of soccer video games was released last October featuring Ronaldinho on all covers (accompanied by different soccer star to hit every target audience), an improved goalkeeper technology, weather control function and about 250 more innovations.

Strategy/Simulation Game: EVE Online

Although Velve's last version of the popular sci-fi MMORPG came out early in 2007, it topped the strategy/simulation game category. The game was awarded best online game of the year already back in 2003 (by Swedish game magazine SuperPlay), and grabbed a bunch of other awards as well as Guinness World Records.

Adventure/Action Game: City of Heroes/City of Villains

NCsoft won the best adventure/action online game for City of Heroes and its subsequent City of Villains, for proving that sequels not necessarily fall from their sequent and that the number of people who wish to do evil is not inferior to the number of people who want to make the world a better place.

First Person Shooting Game: Counter-Strike: Source

Released in 2004, Valve's remake of Counter-Strike, also known as CS:S, apparently had no competition in its wide variety of available weapons, ranging from semi-automatic Berreta to machine guns and pumpguns.

Casual/Racing Game: KartRider

Naturally, the respected team of online games judges would not choose a typical casual game like bejeweled or cake mania, so the winner in the online casual/racing game category is Nexon Korea's CrazyRacing KartRider, a multi-player racing game allowing tens thousands of players to ride fictional vehicles simultaneously.
