Backgammon Pro Wins the WSOP $40,000 No LimitFormer backgammon champ Vitaliy Lunkin continues his domination over the poker world. After winning the Russian Poker Tour, the backgammon-poker pro has championed the World Series of Poker $40,000 No Limit Texas Hold'em main event, held on the wee hours of Monday, June 1st, 2009. Lunkin grabbed the $1,891,012 grand prize and the WSOP gold bracelet.Relatively new in the poker field, Vitaliy Lunkin of Russia was not the immediate favorite to win the WSOP No Limit Hold'em final table, which was seated by top poker stars as former WSOP champion Greg Raymer, Issac Haxton, Noah Schwartz and Ted Forrest. Even after pairing with Issac Haxton for a final heads-up, his runner up to be was the safer bet, yet the latter has lost three times before handing the $40,000 bracelet to the Russian backgammon pro. The drama was televised and would be broadcast on ESPN on July 28, 2009 Winning the World Series of Poker, the poker equivalent of world championship, is the ultimate ambition of every aspiring poker star. After besting a field of over 200 contestants and passing the $1 million check barrier, there is a little likelihood that Mr. Lunkin would be focusing on backgammon, his former game preference, where the highest possible prize is €100,000 at best, and the skill and experience (as opposed to luck and psychology) takes a bigger role.
