The tournament winner is the player who gained the highest score among all the participants. Backgammon tournaments come in variety of formats (elimination, round-robin, swiss) and they are divided into several divisions, which define the players' skill level (novice, intermediate, open).
Backgammon tournaments take place in backgammon clubs as well as in online backgammon rooms. The principle is identical: the tournament players have to register in advance, when the tournament begins they are randomly divided into couples and compete against each other the set numbers of points, and so on, until a winner is declared. The tournament winner can earn, in addition to the prestigious title, a trophy, a money prize, or a free entrance to a more prestigious tourney.
In a single elimination tournament, the competition begins with a set number of contesters. After the first round, only half of them remains, after the second round, half a quarter of the initial number of participants stay, etc. At the end of the tournament, only one table remains in the competition, from which the winner of the tournament is chosen. In a double elimination tournament, every player gets two chances.
Other formats of backgammon tournaments include Swiss, Round Robin, a Swing tournament, a Knockout tournament and other inventions and combinations. Before registering to a backgammon tournament, whether online or in a backgammon club, it is always recommended to verify the rules beforehand.
