Guitar Hero and Prince Kiss GoodbyePrince's refusal to sell his name to Guitar Hero stands out outstandingly after two Beatles members stepped out of their grave to close a deal with GH's biggest rival in the music video games market. However, his refusal to follow the footsteps of Metallica, Aerosmith, and more recently Jane's Addiction, Franz Ferdinand, and The Allman Brothers Band, among others, suits with the multi-genres star, formerly known as O(+>, eccentricity and tendency to provoke controversies.
With the two mega selling music video games hits Guitar Hero and Rock Band constantly adding new names to their row of collaborating artist, Prince's public snubbing of Guitar Hero's offer is a refreshing novelty. In a televised and worded interview on PBS Tavis Smiley Show, Prince argued his decision with the proportion between Guitar Hero's revenues and the importance of learning how to play guitar properly.
"Well, I ain't mad at them. I hear it made, like, $2 billion and they came to us and offered us a very small portion of that. But I just think it's more important that kids learn how to actually play the guitar… it's cool for people who don't have time to learn the chords or ain't interested in it, but to play music is one of the greatest things."
It is not the first time that Prince goes against the grain nor it is his initial objection to technology progress. The artist, born in 1958 as Prince Rogers Nelson and for about 6 years was named The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, made headlines fighting against youtube, aiming to block every unauthorized performance of himself at the household video sharing colossal, even when his tune is faintly heard at the background of a home video, not abhorring threatening to sue his fans for publishing pirate images of him online.
