New Backgammon Quiz in the Memory of Howard Ring

The US Backgammon Federation (USBGF) has launched the first Howard Ring Memorial Quiz, at the Los Angeles Open held on the June 11-13 weekend in Van Nuys, California. The backgammon quiz, planned to be an annual tradition, is named after Howard Ring, one of the most notable figures in American backgammon during the 1990s and early 2000s, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 45.

The USBGF Howard Ring Memorial Quiz consists of fourteen questions composed by the elite of today's American backgammon: Joseph (Joe) Russell, Steve Sax, Phil Simborg, Stick Rice and Paul Weaver, who all function at the USBGF boards and/or committees. The quiz, along with a pamphlet of backgammon tips and advice, will be given free of charge to all USBGF members and new registrations throughout 2010 and for the sum of $10 to non-members.

The new backgammon quiz is one of the efforts made by the US Backgammon Federation, founded less than a year ago in 2009, to improve and spread backgammon in the American public. Other efforts include opening backgammon clubs in Universities and regulating backgammon players' rating. It also perpetuates the memory of Howard Ring, an honorary member in the American backgammon community, the winner of the last World Cup event that held in 1998, the original editor of the Giants of Backgammon list, and a Backgammon Giant in all lists published until death in 2005.
