New World Backgammon ChampionLars Trabolt of Denmark was crowned the 2008 World Backgammon Champion on Sunday, July 13, after defeating his Portuguese opponent Mario Sequieira at the final match of the Monte Carlo World Backgammon Championship.
2008 World Backgammon Champion and the next generation of backgamon
The 33rd World Backgammon Championship took place at the Farmont hotel in Monaco, Monte Carlo on July 6-15, 2008. The event drew hundreds of professional backgammon players from all around the world, with outstanding presence to the residents of the Kingdom of Denmark. The winner of the Monte Carlo Backgammon Championship had also emerged out of Denmark. Lars Trabolt, who is known as Trabi, became the 4th Dane player to earn this title.
Lars Trabolt, number 16 in the 2007 Giants of Backgammon list, bested his opponent Mario Sequieira of Portugal in a long 25-points match held on Sunday. The Intermediate Division was topped by Valery Mikhaylets of Russia and the Beginners by Vasili Kavun of Ukraine. The Fortis World Team Championship was won by the representatives of Greece and the Doubles tournament by a pair of Japanese players Kenji Shimodaira and Takamitsu Suzuki.
