Top Backgammon Player in Greece

George Kleitsas of Athens was named Greece's top backgammon player after winning the second tournament organized by the Greek Backgammon Federation.

With 49 ranking points, 9 wins out of 11 matches, Athens man George Kleitsas is ranked at number 1 at Greece's Ranking List. The runner up to the top of National Ranking List is currently Kostopoulos Kostas with 43 points and 6 wins out of 10 matches.

The Greek Backgammon Federation, which was recently formed with the help the well known backgammon expert Michael Strato Liberopoulos, purposes to organize tournaments and to create ranking systems for the game of Tavli, the Greek variation of backgammon. The Greek Federation backgammon tournaments take place every month, on the first or the second Saturday.

The Greek Backgammon Federation tournament point system awards 3 points for signing up to the tourney, 3 points for participation in the main match and 2 points for winning the main match. 2 more points are given to backgammon players who took part in the consolation match, while the winner of the match will be awarded with an extra point.

As for early January 2008, George Kleitsas is ranked at number one, followed by Kostopoulos Kostas, Groutsos Chris and Manolios Michael. The ranking list will face additional changes following the third Greek Backgammon Federation monthly tournament.
